Lecture éditoriale
Historic England identifies Brierley's design for Percy Stancliffe and includes the attached courtyard wall within the listing. Handmade brick, stone details, carefully ordered wings and an elaborate entrance create an image of older country-house formality.
The interiors include historic-style stairs, decorative doorways and reused eighteenth-century fireplaces. The listed account allows that one fireplace may have come from an earlier hall on the site, distinguishing an inherited object from the date of the present building.
Our editorial reading: Sion Hill demonstrates how revival architecture can accommodate earlier material without itself being Georgian. The entrance, courtyard and garden front reveal a deliberately composed modern residence.
