Lecture éditoriale

Historic England identifies the late-sixteenth-century central block and its corner turrets separately from the four wings added in 1625. Subsequent alteration and a major nineteenth-century restoration contributed further to the present building.

The listed interiors include historic plaster ceilings, extensive panelling and later Gothic library fittings. These layers distinguish the residence from nearby Sherborne Old Castle, a separate ruined site with its own admission arrangements. The current operator also presents the house's collections and Capability Brown landscape.

Our editorial reading: the extended plan and decorative changes show how a prominent Elizabethan residence became a continuing family seat. The name should not obscure the distinction between this house and the older castle ruin.
