Lecture éditoriale
Historic England distinguishes the mid-sixteenth-century tower built for Sir William Ingilby from the substantial additions of 1783–1786. The later ranges deliberately use battlements, buttresses and arched openings to relate to the older building.
The tower preserves historic panelling, fireplaces and early-seventeenth-century plaster decoration. Other rooms and service ranges belong to later domestic arrangements. The apparent castle-like unity therefore conceals several construction phases and changing residential uses.
Our editorial reading: compare the tower's surviving fabric with the Georgian interpretation of Gothic architecture beside it. The relationship is more informative than assigning the entire house a medieval date.
