Lecture éditoriale
The hall's history records Milner's purchase in 1927 and his programme of restoration and extension. An architect himself, he employed local craftspeople and reused historic timbers while commissioning stonework, leadwork and metal fittings in sympathetic forms.
His planting interests also shaped the gardens. After his death in 1960, the property passed to the Guardians of the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham; the institution describes the hall as leased and operated by the Diocese of Leeds. Its present retreat role is distinct from ordinary historic-house tourism.
Our editorial reading: the apparent age of a crafted detail can be misleading here. Restoration and deliberate historical continuity are fundamental to the place's identity.
