Palace of Tau
The Palace of Tau stands beside Reims Cathedral and formerly housed the archbishop. Its architectural history includes rebuilding after a medieval fire, alterations in the Flamboyant Gothic style around 1500, and transformation into a classical palace between 1671 and 1710. Fire severely damaged the building in 1914. Restoration after the Second World War prepared it for its museum role; the museum opened in 1972.

Lecture éditoriale
The palace can be read in relation to the cathedral and the archbishop's temporal authority. Its documented sequence of rebuilding, damage and restoration makes it a useful place to consider how a monument's present appearance contains both surviving fabric and later reconstruction. Treat those layers separately when interpreting the architecture and museum setting.
