Lecture éditoriale
The National Trust dates the Bedingfeld family's house to 1482. Its history includes religious persecution, Civil War damage and later threats to the building's survival. The family's Catholic identity is central to the property's interpretation.
Much of the present interior character also reflects the sixth baronet's Victorian Gothic work. The house therefore combines a late-medieval foundation with later architectural additions and a consciously romantic treatment of the past; its appearance should not be read as wholly fifteenth-century.
Outside, formal and more informal planting are joined by a kitchen garden, orchard and herbaceous borders. Wider routes cross woodland and meadows beside the River Gadder.
Planning: consult the official visitor information for current hall access, estate routes and accessibility. An entrance to the grounds does not establish access to every interior space.

Conseils de visite
Our editorial view: compare the moated house's medieval origins with its Victorian reinvention, then explore how the cultivated gardens give way to the wider Norfolk estate.
