Lecture éditoriale
The property's history dates the present house to 1666, built for the eighth Earl of Derby. Later changes include bays added in 1790, higher southern rooms in 1832 and western rooms in 1851. A later chapel was removed after serious decay in the twentieth century.
The house remains a family residence with limited public opening. Its literary connections include James Spedding, editor and biographer of Francis Bacon, and visits by Alfred Tennyson. Books, manuscripts and domestic rooms are interpreted within that continuing household setting.
Our editorial reading: the incremental additions and relatively intimate scale matter as much as the celebrated visitors. Mirehouse connects family life, reading and landscape without requiring a single grand architectural statement.
