Lecture éditoriale
The museum identifies the building as a cottage originally provided for the estate manager of the nearby Vache. Milton came here in 1665 after leaving plague-stricken London, with accommodation arranged by Thomas Ellwood.
Although the stay lasted less than eighteen months, the institution associates it with the completion of Paradise Lost and the inspiration for Paradise Regained. The building was preserved through a public appeal in 1887 and opened as a museum. Its collection includes early editions and material interpreting Milton's poetry and political prose.
Our editorial reading: a brief residence can acquire lasting cultural significance. The domestic scale offers a counterpoint to the reach of the literary work associated with it.
