Lecture éditoriale
Historic England identifies sixteenth-century and early-seventeenth-century work beneath later alterations. Francis Smith of Warwick was involved in the 1720s remodelling, while William Smith designed the garden front in 1744.
The listing describes contrasting elevations, sash windows, a pedimented centre and an eighteenth-century staircase and panelled rooms. Later additions and changes have also contributed to the standing building. The operator presents house and garden visits within a property that remains a family home.
Our editorial reading: compare the more formal garden front with the building's irregular inherited plan. The house demonstrates how Georgian architectural order could be imposed on an older residence.
