Lecture éditoriale
Historic England dates the first Lullingstone House to the period 1543–1580 under Sir Percyvall Hart. Portions survive on the north and east fronts, while later rebuilding and adaptation changed the entrance and domestic rooms.
The listing explicitly distinguishes the name from the building's character: it became known as Lullingstone Castle in the mid-eighteenth century. Its red-brick elevations, sash windows and interior decoration reflect a residence altered across several periods. Surviving early work and later classical details should be read together rather than assigned wholly to Tudor construction.
Our editorial reading: the changing name is part of the property's social history. Architectural evidence offers a more reliable guide to function than the word 'castle' alone.
