Lecture éditoriale

Historic England describes Levens as mainly sixteenth-century work incorporating an earlier, probably fourteenth-century core. Major remodelling followed in the later seventeenth century, with further eighteenth- and nineteenth-century additions. These phases are more precise than assigning the whole house to the date of an early tower.

The listing identifies mullioned and transomed windows, prominent chimneys, plasterwork and panelling. Dated rainwater fittings preserve evidence of several campaigns. It also records the importance of the late-seventeenth-century gardens laid out for Colonel James Graham.

Our editorial reading: the relationship between the house's changing domestic form and the disciplined garden setting is central. Neither should be treated as the product of a single moment.
