Lecture éditoriale
The operator dates the principal building campaign to the 1520s, when Henry Marney used architecture to express his wealth and standing at Henry VIII's court. His death in 1523, followed shortly by his son's, left the larger palace project incomplete.
The surviving frontage combines brickwork with decorative terracotta using Italianate forms. Other ranges, including the former stable block now known as the Long Gallery, help explain the scale of the original ambition. Later families adapted the property, and modern services and visitor facilities have added further layers.
Our editorial reading: the tower is most revealing as part of an interrupted project. Its scale and ornament convey an intended status that the unfinished palace never fully realised.
