Lecture éditoriale

The estate's history records William Petre's purchase of the manor in 1539 following the dissolution of Barking Abbey. He replaced an earlier steward's house with a new brick residence. The operator identifies high chimneys, crow-stepped gables, mullioned windows and oak-panelled rooms among its characteristic features.

The building originally enclosed a courtyard. Later alteration included removing the west wing, leaving the U-shaped plan, and changing rooms and circulation. These adaptations mean that its Tudor character coexists with significant later work. Enclosed gardens include lawns, a walled garden and a stew pond.

Our editorial reading: Ingatestone offers a way to connect architectural ambition with the transfer of land and influence in the sixteenth century. Its continuing domestic use adds another layer to that history.
