Historic England identifies this Homewood as the house at Old Knebworth. Its account describes a whitewashed brick ground floor, weatherboarding above, tiled roofs and prominent chimneys, rather than a surviving Georgian country house.
The entrance uses a tunnel-like arch and rusticated details. On the garden side, a recessed centre and applied classical loggia establish a different architectural emphasis. The listing also records fireplaces and cornices designed in an early-eighteenth-century manner.
Our editorial reading: the building demonstrates how Lutyens could combine several historical languages within one modern domestic composition. Its revival details should not be read as evidence that the standing house predates 1900.
