Holyrood Palace
Holyroodhouse stands at the end of Edinburgh's Royal Mile. David I founded an Augustinian monastery here in 1128. James IV began a palace beside the abbey in 1501, and James V added a substantial tower. Charles II commissioned major rebuilding in the 1670s under the architect William Bruce. The resulting palace includes a symmetrical facade and apartments arranged around a classical quadrangle.

Lecture éditoriale
The documented progression from abbey to royal palace provides a clear way to read Holyroodhouse. Compare the surviving tower with the later symmetrical composition and consider how successive building campaigns changed the setting of royal residence. This architectural reading does not require assumptions about private access or the present use of individual rooms.
