Historic England describes surviving early-fifteenth-century elements within a building largely shaped by sixteenth-century work and a seventeenth-century wing. Brick facing and later alterations partly conceal the timber structure.

The surrounding moat provides another important element of the historic setting. Today the museum interprets the history of Harrow through exhibitions, activities and the site itself.
