Lecture éditoriale
Historic England records Goddards' original purpose as a retreat for women of limited means, commissioned by Frederick Mirrielees. Lutyens extended and altered it in 1910, changing its domestic use while retaining the earlier architectural framework.
The plan forms a splayed quadrangle, with roughcast walls, prominent brick chimneys and tiled roofs. The listing identifies oak-framed interior spaces, inglenook fireplaces and a private skittle alley among its significant features. It also attributes the garden terraces to Gertrude Jekyll.
Our editorial reading: the original social purpose is an essential part of the architecture. Shared recreation and carefully composed domestic spaces distinguish the house from a residence conceived solely for one family.
