Damsgård Manor: Bergen’s wooden rococo retreat

Damsgård translates the ambitions of eighteenth-century Bergen into timber, ornament and garden space. This former summer residence offers a different reading of the Norwegian manor: a cultivated retreat closely tied to the social life of a trading city. It is currently closed for restoration.

Damsgård Manor stands in Laksevåg, Bergen. Its present appearance developed in the 1770s for Joachim Christian Geelmuyden, later known as Gyldenkrantz. The Janson family acquired the property in 1796 and retained it until 1983. Bymuseet describes the house as an important example of Norwegian rococo architecture in wood. Restoration between 1983 and 1993 included the recreation of gardens representing late-eighteenth-century forms. The museum’s current notice states that Damsgård is closed in 2025 and 2026 for restoration, with no group visits offered during that closure.

Lecture éditoriale

The expressive façade makes Damsgård an instructive choice for looking beyond stone as the expected material of a grand residence. Its interest lies in the handling of timber and ornament, and in the intimate relationship between the house and its enclosed gardens.

The recreated gardens should be understood as interpretations informed by historical practice, rather than untouched survivors of the eighteenth century. That distinction makes the estate valuable as a place to consider conservation itself: what can be preserved, what has to be reconstructed, and how the care of living plants contributes to the character of a historic house. The present restoration is part of that continuing work.

Conseils de visite

Do not plan an interior or museum-garden visit during the announced 2025–2026 closure. Consult Bymuseet for a confirmed reopening and any revised access arrangements. The museum’s broader gardens page describes public landscape areas around Damsgård, but current restoration restrictions should be checked before making a special journey. After reopening, consider a house tour together with the recreated gardens.
