Lecture éditoriale
Historic England describes the hotel's main stone frontage as probably late eighteenth century. Its account identifies a bowed, crenellated northern wing, a porch with an embattled parapet and a twentieth-century upper storey. The building forms part of the architectural group around Castle Green.
The hotel's own account records the Chapman family's arrival in 1950 and subsequent restoration and adaptation. It also discusses the much earlier history of Taunton Castle. Those site-wide medieval associations should not be taken as a construction date for the hotel's present main façade.
Our editorial reading: this is a useful distinction between a historic setting and the particular building experienced today. Hospitality and later Gothic styling have contributed their own layers to Castle Green.
