Lecture éditoriale
The estate's history dates construction of the present castle to 1807–1810 and identifies John Nash as its architect. Its castellated appearance belongs to a Regency house, rather than establishing that the standing building is a medieval fortress.
After the Trevanion family's departure, Michael Williams purchased the deteriorated property in 1853. Repairs and later occupation reshaped its domestic life. The estate links the development of its plant collections particularly with J. C. Williams, whose gardening interests included support for plant-collecting expeditions.
Our editorial reading: the romantic architecture and botanical landscape offer two different ways of imagining a place. Their relationship is best understood through the successive owners who repaired, inhabited and planted the estate.
