Lecture éditoriale

Historic England dates James Paine's reconstruction for the Lamb family to approximately 1760–1780. The work transformed an older courtyard house in stages, placing the staircase within its former courtyard rather than starting from an entirely empty site.

The listing describes brick elevations with stone details, a classical entrance and a top-lit staircase hall. Its account also records decorative ceilings, paintings and library fittings as important elements of the interiors. These descriptions document architectural significance; they are not confirmation that every room or object is currently accessible to visitors.

Our editorial reading: Brocket's formal appearance conceals a process of rebuilding. The staircase is particularly useful for understanding how an earlier plan could become a setting for eighteenth-century display.
