Lecture éditoriale

Historic England identifies a late-sixteenth-century house built for Sir Edmund Anderson, with a chapel remodelled in 1678. The extensive Gothic transformation followed between 1749 and 1803 for Sir Roger Newdigate, involving several designers and successive stages of work.

The listing describes a courtyard plan, sandstone façades, traceried windows and richly ornamented parapets. Inside, Gothic plaster vaulting, decorative panelling and elaborate fireplaces create a deliberately medievalising setting. Surviving earlier features include reused staircase elements and a sixteenth-century fireplace in the long gallery.

Our editorial reading: Arbury's architectural drama comes from reinvention rather than survival as an untouched medieval house. Compare the Gothic envelope with the older fabric it incorporates and the classical subjects introduced into some of its decoration.
