Lecture éditoriale

The estate's official history connects the present mansion with Barlow Trecothick, a merchant and former Lord Mayor of London. Its Palladian character belongs to an eighteenth-century country-house setting rather than a medieval royal castle.

The house subsequently served as a residence for Archbishops of Canterbury before later institutional and hospitality uses. These changing functions are important to its history: the word 'palace' here reflects an ecclesiastical association and should not be taken as proof that the present house was originally built as a royal residence.

The current operator presents reception rooms and grounds for weddings, celebrations, corporate occasions and filming. These uses continue the building's history of adaptation but do not establish unrestricted public access.

Our editorial reading: compare the architectural setting of a country retreat with the social and institutional roles acquired later.
