Redaktionelle Einordnung
English Heritage records that the Abbot of Furness built the fortress to protect the Furness coast. The surviving keep, inner and outer baileys and towered curtain walls demonstrate a substantial defensive arrangement rather than a solitary tower. The site is also associated with Lambert Simnel's landing in 1487 during his challenge to Henry VII.
Piel's island position remains essential to understanding it. The separation from the mainland was part of its historical setting and continues to shape practical access today. The castle's management and the transport service are not the same operation.
Our editorial reading: place the visible enclosure within its coastal and abbey-related context. The relationship between sea approach, defensive walls and open courts is as significant as any individual surviving structure.
