Redaktionelle Einordnung
Dalton Castle housed the administration of the abbey's lordship, including a courtroom and supporting accommodation associated with justice, detention and storage. The National Trust identifies the surviving tower as fourteenth-century. The abbey's foundation charter of 1127 is an earlier institutional date, not the construction date of this building.
Court use continued after the abbey's dissolution in 1537. The interior was substantially altered in 1856, when three upper floors were replaced by a single upper room and additional stairs. The eighth Duke of Buccleuch gave the building to the National Trust in 1965.
Our editorial reading: the tower is most informative as evidence of local government and an abbey's territorial authority. Its later internal changes are part of that story, so the present room arrangement should not be assumed to reproduce the medieval one.

Besuchsempfehlung
Check the National Trust's current opening information and guided-tour arrangements. Read the compact tower alongside the history of Furness Abbey's lordship; the name 'castle' does not describe its whole function.
