Redaktionelle Einordnung
The estate's detailed history connects a loan raised by Sir Michael Blount in 1588 with the presumed start of the present house. It records completion under his son Sir Richard in 1612. This account distinguishes the standing residence from the much older history of the manor.
Later episodes include Civil War sequestration, changes in ownership and literary associations. The estate continued as both a family setting and a working rural property. Its long institutional history should not be used to describe every part of the house as medieval.
Our editorial reading: Mapledurham is a useful place to separate the age of an estate from the architecture built to express the standing of a particular household.
