Redaktionelle Einordnung
Historic England identifies late-fifteenth- or sixteenth-century fabric, remodelling around 1725–1730 and restoration by Peto from 1899. The classical façade therefore overlays an older domestic building.
The listing records sash windows, a balustraded parapet and a loggia with Ionic columns. Inside, early fireplaces and panelling coexist with later work and Continental painted panels incorporated by Peto. Architectural and sculptural fragments were also introduced into the grounds, making collecting an important part of the setting.
Our editorial reading: Iford invites attention to deliberate recomposition. Its character results from the meeting of inherited fabric, Georgian order and Peto's later choices.
