Redaktionelle Einordnung
Historic England identifies a fourteenth-century open hall house associated with the Davenport family. In the later sixteenth century a floor was inserted and a long gallery added; that gallery was subsequently removed. Further alterations in the 1880s were carried out by George Faulkner Armitage.
The listing describes timber framing on a stone base, jettied upper floors, varied decorative panels and richly treated windows. Its interiors include evidence of wall paintings, historic glazing, plaster decoration and a chapel restored in 1938. Not every picturesque gable or surface belongs to the earliest building phase.
Our editorial reading: Bramall is best read as a sequence of changing domestic expectations. The transformation of an open hall into layered rooms is as significant as the exterior's celebrated pattern of timber and infill.
