Austad: a classical country house in Drammen

The garden-facing front is the key to the composition. A central temple motif establishes hierarchy, while the long, low body of the house keeps the building closely connected to its slope. The contrast invites attention to the way classical forms were adapted to a domestic setting, rather than reproduced at palace scale.

The building also records change. Earlier cellars, the post-fire residence and the later entrance belong to different moments in its life; treating them separately makes the house more intelligible than assigning the whole ensemble to a single stylistic label. Its association with the Cappelen household places Austad within the mercantile culture of the Drammen region. For now, the responsible way to plan around that history is to recognise the difference between an architectural subject worth documenting and an interior that is currently available to visit.
