Editorial reading
Scotney brings together two distinct buildings: the Victorian mansion and the older moated castle. The National Trust presents them as parts of a designed landscape, alongside a walled kitchen garden, parkland and ancient woodland. The estate covers approximately 780 acres.
The distinction matters when planning a visit: admission to the estate does not imply access to every interior. At the October 2026 source check, the National Trust stated that the Old Castle interior was closed; house, garden and estate arrangements should be checked separately. Landscape restoration work was also announced for 2026.
Planning: consult the current official calendar and access information before setting out. Leave time for the garden and views between the two buildings, rather than treating the ruin as the whole property.

Recommendation
Our editorial view: follow the changing views across the garden to see how an older ruin became part of a later country-house landscape.
