Editorial reading

English Heritage explains Prudhoe's position through its command of a Tyne crossing. The approach passes defensive features including a barbican, ditch and gatehouse, while the inner enclosure contains a keep and gatehouse chapel. A later Regency Gothic house within the walls adds a distinct domestic phase.

The combination demonstrates that the site did not remain exclusively military in function. Its built history includes changing expectations of residence and comfort as well as defensive strength. The later mansion should not be described as part of the original medieval building campaign.

Our editorial reading: compare the approach and successive enclosures with the later house inside them. This gives a clearer account of the site's development than treating all standing structures as a single castle of one date.

Recommendation

Check current arrangements for the grounds and inner ward separately. The official guidance distinguishes limited interior-opening occasions from grounds access and notes slopes, gravel, cobbles and steep steps on some routes.
