Editorial reading
The National Trust's heritage record explicitly connects Shute Barton with the Grade I designation OLD SHUTE HOUSE, NHLE 1171033. This identifies the surviving building; a separate heritage record concerns archaeological remains of demolished portions.
The surviving range belongs to a house developed between approximately the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries. It includes the kitchen wing and accommodation associated with the former service range. Much of the larger house was demolished in the late eighteenth century, and the remnant later served as a farmhouse before repairs in the 1950s.
Our editorial reading: approach the visible building as a fragment of a larger domestic arrangement. The kitchen and roof are important clues to functions that extended beyond the surviving walls.
