Editorial reading

The hall's own history dates the standing Tudor house to around 1500 and associates it with Sir William Pierrepont. It distinguishes that building from the family's longer connection with the site, established through a thirteenth-century marriage.

Later additions and alterations contributed to the present residence. The operator's historical account also introduces family members involved in politics, art and the suffrage movement, including Georgina Brackenbury and Marie Louise Pierrepont. A wider archive of family and estate papers is held through the University of Nottingham's Manuscripts Department, providing a separate research resource from the house visit.

Our editorial reading: the most revealing continuity is one of occupation and adaptation. The brick house is a setting for successive domestic and public lives, rather than an untouched image of Tudor society.

Recommendation

Check the operator's seasonal house and garden calendar and any tour or event bookings. Private functions and accommodation may have separate access arrangements. For documentary research, contact the archive holder rather than assuming that original papers are available during admission.
