Editorial reading
The estate's history connects Heale with Charles II's refuge during his escape in 1651. It also records severe fire damage in 1835, followed by later reconstruction and enlargement. The chronology of the earliest house is not stated consistently in that account, so no precise founding year is asserted here.
After Louis Greville purchased the property in 1894, restoration extended to both house and gardens. Harold Peto contributed garden designs, with an Italianate terrace identified as part of his influence. The estate also describes a Japanese tea house and bridge brought to the garden under Greville's ownership.
Our editorial reading: the streams are an organising presence, connecting different garden moods around an altered residence. The present landscape is the work of successive generations rather than a complete survival from one period.

Recommendation
The official site stated that the gardens were closed for winter when checked on 21 October 2026. Confirm reopening and garden admission before travelling. The house remains a family residence; garden opening does not establish interior access.
