Editorial reading
The operator dates the house to 1598, built for Richard Infield and Katharine Compton. It identifies their initials above an entrance and carved portraits in an interior fireplace as surviving connections with that early household.
William Robinson purchased Gravetye in 1885 and lived there until 1935. The property's history presents the gardens and woods as a place where he developed ideas about naturalistic planting. Peter Herbert subsequently established the country-house hotel after arriving in 1958, giving the residence a new hospitality use.
Our editorial reading: house and garden should be considered together, but their principal stories belong to different periods. The Elizabethan domestic setting and Robinson's later landscape experiments create a dialogue between architectural enclosure and cultivated naturalism.

Recommendation
Check current hotel and restaurant booking arrangements and ask specifically about garden access. Accommodation, dining and garden experiences may have separate conditions; the historic landscape should not be assumed to operate as an unrestricted public park.
