Editorial reading
Historic England places most of Gissing Hall around 1840, while allowing for an earlier core. A seventeenth- or eighteenth-century northern wing survives within a much-expanded residence, so the standing building should not be assigned wholly to the older date.
The listing describes red brick, slate roofs, a projecting entrance porch and decorative battlements. The porch has a four-centred doorway, while mullioned and transomed windows reinforce the Tudor reference. A clock tower and a larger central tower give the irregular composition a deliberately picturesque outline.
Our editorial reading: the medievalising vocabulary here is primarily an expression of nineteenth-century taste. Read the older wing separately from the later mansion to avoid confusing revival style with original Tudor construction.
