Editorial reading
Historic England dates the house's main phases to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, with nineteenth- and twentieth-century additions and alterations. Its description records a former quadrangular plan reduced substantially to the present three-sided arrangement.
Decorative timber framing, oriel windows, patterned panels and projecting upper floors contribute to the familiar black-and-white appearance. The listing also distinguishes later brickwork and twentieth-century cladding that imitates earlier framing. The current owner presents the house for visits and hosts performances in the grounds, continuing its use as a lived-in property.
Our editorial reading: the patterned elevations invite close looking, but visual unity should not be mistaken for a single date. Changes in materials and the absent ranges help explain the house's long domestic history.
