Editorial reading
Historic England describes a sixteenth- and seventeenth-century U-shaped core, later expanded to enclose another courtyard. Around 1770 a classical wing was added and the south front remodelled in Gothic style; further work followed in the nineteenth century and in 1906.
The listing distinguishes these campaigns through the façades, turrets, window forms and entrances. It records some reused seventeenth-century panelling but identifies the staircase as twentieth-century work in an older style. Architectural appearance therefore cannot be used as a simple guide to the age of each feature.
Our editorial reading: Enville presents several ideas of the country house within one ensemble. Its courtyards and contrasting fronts help explain the changing priorities of successive owners.
