Domus Aurea
Nero began building the Domus Aurea after the fire of AD 64. Architects Severus and Celer designed the residence, and Fabullus decorated it. Buildings were separated by gardens, woodland and vineyards, with an artificial lake in the valley now occupied by the Colosseum.

Editorial reading
Editorial interpretation: the account of buildings set among planted areas invites a reading of the residence as an extensive landscape. This perspective helps connect the surviving interiors with a palace complex whose setting has changed profoundly.
