Editorial reading
The property's architectural history identifies Thomas Smythe's house, completed in 1582, as the core of Corsham Court. Later owners repeatedly altered its fronts and interiors, especially to accommodate the Methuen family's paintings.
Capability Brown was commissioned in 1760 to extend the house while working on the landscape. His picture gallery occupied an enlarged wing. John Nash subsequently introduced Gothic work, much of which was later removed; Thomas Bellamy remodelled the north front in the nineteenth century. These are successive campaigns, not one coherent Elizabethan construction.
Corsham remains privately owned, with state rooms, collections and gardens offered under published visitor arrangements.
Our editorial reading: the collection is an architectural force here. Follow how the need to display paintings changed the size, circulation and appearance of an older house.
