Editorial reading
The hall's own history identifies parts of the present building with the mid-fifteenth century and describes substantial rebuilding in the 1560s. It attributes further additions, including an upstairs parlour, staircases and panelled rooms, to the early seventeenth century.
A remodelling around 1700 changed the house's orientation towards its park. The account then records twentieth-century abandonment and decline, followed by a long restoration begun after James Cartland purchased the hall in 1987. Its historical narrative distinguishes the older estate and documentary record from successive changes to the standing house.
Our editorial reading: Carnfield is best approached through that sequence of reuse and recovery. The present arrangement should not be treated as an untouched interior belonging to one period.
