Editorial reading
The operator's historical account associates the building with a possible medieval chapel and later use as a hunting lodge. It places a major transformation into a castle folly around 1790 under the Basset family. Those claims concern different phases: the eighteenth-century date should not be read as a secure founding date for every surviving part.
The structure follows the rocky outcrop, incorporating turrets and decorative battlements within an irregular plan. The account also records repeated repair, decline and restoration before a restaurant opened in 1980. The much earlier archaeology of Carn Brea hill is a separate history from that of the present building.
Our editorial reading: this is architecture composed around geology, with a romantic silhouette acquired through adaptation rather than a simple, continuous military story.

Recommendation
Contact the restaurant for current reservations and access arrangements. Dining access is distinct from visiting the surrounding hill; take terrain and weather into account and avoid assuming unrestricted entry to the building.
