Editorial reading
Historic England records major rebuilding in 1764–1768, with further work by John Carr on the interiors and side wings. The house combines an older core, Georgian additions and a late-nineteenth-century ballroom rather than belonging entirely to a single construction campaign.
Barnsley purchased the property in 1951 and opened the museum in 1957. The museum's account explains that its art collection was assembled largely after the purchase; it should not be presented as the intact furnishings of the former family household. Historic rooms now sit alongside gallery displays, including work associated with the De Morgans.
Our editorial reading: compare the building's domestic history with the public collection it now accommodates. The shift from family seat to civic museum is central to understanding the experience today.

Recommendation
Check current museum access, exhibitions and any room closures with Barnsley Museums. Cannon Hall Museum and nearby commercial attractions have separate arrangements. Family and estate archives are consulted through the archive service rather than ordinary museum admission.
