Editorial reading
The hall's official architectural history identifies the lower part of Stephen's Tower as its earliest surviving fabric, associated with the twelfth century. It records a later medieval brick manor house, much of which was replaced during Sir John's rebuilding in the 1560s.
That Elizabethan campaign retained elements of the north lodgings and tower, adapting their windows and architectural detail to the new composition. A new main range provided a great hall, parlour and great chamber; the south wing included domestic accommodation, a kitchen and chapel. The balanced appearance therefore results partly from integrating older work with new construction.
Our editorial reading: look beyond stylistic uniformity. The house can be read as a carefully composed image of continuity, assembled from several phases rather than created entirely at once.

Recommendation
Use the hall's current visitor information to check admission, room access and any guided or specialist tours. House, collections and grounds may have different arrangements; allow time to compare the surviving towers with the principal ranges.
