Editorial reading
Historic England places the origins of this manor house around 1170–1175 and associates them with Roger de Stuteville. Its description distinguishes a fifteenth-century roof from outer walls dating approximately to 1601–1610, with further changes to the windows.
The undercroft retains thick circular piers, carved capitals and ribbed vaults. A spiral stair leads towards the former great hall, where blocked openings and surviving roof structure record later phases of use. The brick exterior therefore does not tell the whole chronological story.
This entry concerns the old Manor House, not the neighbouring, later Burton Agnes Hall. Information about the Hall's interiors or gardens should not automatically be transferred to this building.
Our editorial reading: the contrast between the medieval interior and later envelope makes the house a compact lesson in architectural survival through adaptation.

Recommendation
Confirm current access specifically to the old Manor House with the property's visitor operators. Do not assume that a Hall or garden ticket includes entry to this separate building, or that historic descriptions guarantee access to every level.
