Editorial reading

Historic England dates the original house to the mid-eighteenth century and describes enlargement in the early nineteenth century, followed by later alterations. The older south-facing core acquired wings forming a U-shaped plan, with the west wing providing a new principal front.

The listing records roughcast walls, slate roofs, bowed projections and a west entrance with Doric columns beneath a flat canopy. It describes much-altered interiors and conversion into three dwellings at the time of its account. That description is historical documentation, not a fresh verification of present occupation. An embattled rear parapet should not be mistaken for proof of medieval military origins.

Our editorial reading: the changed orientation is especially revealing. Rather than one fixed composition, the house expresses successive ideas about approach, display and domestic space.
