Editorial reading

Historic England's list description is cautious about Bentham Manor's origins. It considers a thirteenth- or fourteenth-century date possible, but allows that the house may instead be seventeenth-century. The pointed arch within the porch is early, yet the record expressly states that it is unclear whether this element survives in its original position.

The building includes dressed limestone walls, a stone-slate roof, later windows and blocked openings. Earthworks behind the house suggest an early site, but do not by themselves establish the date of every standing wall. The recorded inspection was external, from the road; the interior was not inspected.

Our editorial reading: treat the arch and surrounding earthworks as evidence to investigate, rather than resolving the uncertainty into a single confident medieval construction date.
