Château d’Azay-le-Rideau
Azay-le-Rideau · Indre-et-Loire — France — XVI–XIX
The château of Azay-le-Rideau stands on a small island in the Indre, in Touraine. Built for Gilles Berthelot during the reign of Francis I, its early-sixteenth-century wings combine French building traditions with decoration influenced by Italy. The present appearance also reflects substantial nineteenth-century intervention, particularly under the Biencourt family, and the landscape park belongs to that later phase. The French state acquired the property in 1905; it is now managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux. Architecture, furnished rooms and the surrounding water must therefore be read as parts of a site shaped in more than one period. The park is a setting for the building and a historic creation in its own right.
