The Château de Beauregard at Cellettes began as a late-fifteenth-century hunting lodge associated with François I and later served as a residence for royal ministers. Its present appearance reflects several centuries of change. Paul Ardier began the celebrated Gallery of the Illustrious after acquiring the estate in 1617; the gallery now contains 327 portraits of figures in French and European political history. A 40-hectare landscaped park includes the Garden of Portraits, laid out in 1992 by landscape architect Gilles Clément, alongside an older rose garden and other planted areas. The estate has remained in the same family since 1926. The relationship between a modest Renaissance château, its portrait gallery and later landscape design gives Beauregard a distinct character within the Blois area.
